How to Drink Wine Like a WankerTHEATRE
How to Drink Wine Like a Wanker is a charmingly humorous yet heart wrenching autobiographical piece written, performed and directed by Anna Thomas. It follows one woman’s accidental journey from Corporate Executive (and self-confessed wine novice) to an unemployed phony wine aficionado, the tragedy she faced that ended her career, and how learning an appreciation of wine helped her find parallels in living a worthwhile life.
Part performance, part storytelling, part wine tasting, the audience is taken on a journey involving six outstanding South Australian wines, each used as a mile stone, or chapter in the artist’s life, weaving the perceptions and qualities of the wine into her own story.
The idea sneaks up on the audience, with a variety of stories that expose her lack of knowledge and the ridiculousness of wine pretention, but as the story moves from the white wines to the reds, the audience is confronted with the realities that a corporate woman can face in a man’s world, and how a woman’s secret and unbearable tragedy can upend a career.
The performance touches a sense of relevance in the lives of all audience members, whether it is as a wine lover (or wanker!) as an individual lost in a journey of self-discovery, or the silent biological plight of women that is so often disregarded. The result is an incredibly raw performance, so personal, so honest, at times even sobering, and yet completely joyous in its realisation.

Anna Thomas is life long theatre lover, who only recently was brave (or insane) enough to take the leap from massive corporate sell out to debutante writer and solo performance artist.
In 2000, mid way through her undergraduate degree of Occupational Therapy, Anna realised she had let the voice in her head deny her the artistic passion that was bubbling below. She began taking acting classes at night in preparation to move into an undergraduate course in dramatic arts. The universe however had other plans for Anna, and alas herself blessed with the arrival of her greatest achievement, her perfect little human Chloe.
As a single mother she focused on carving out a corporate executive career to ensure the life her daughter deserves. But the arts kept calling her. She performed in amateur productions such as Rabbit Hole, The Vagina Monologues and I Love You Because, as well as volunteering in theatre venues and hosting international performers every Adelaide Fringe for the last 10 years.
In 2018 she boldly made her move. Anna wrote, performed and produced her first solo show, How To Drink Wine Like A Wanker at the Adelaide Fringe, and received significant critical acclaim. After a sell-out season, including a complete sell out of additional shows added to the season, How to Drink Wine Like A Wanker is being premiered across the oceans.
